Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a Japanese language school in Japan? Where can I read honest reviews?
First, check that the school is on the Immigration Services Agency's list of notified institutions or MEXT's list of certified Japanese language institutions. In JWC's "Search Japanese language schools" you can find schools on these official lists by name, prefecture, category and course field, and read reviews from students who actually attended on each school's page. Reviews rate 8 items: teaching quality, teacher atmosphere, student atmosphere, advancement support, job support, cost, living support and ease of part-time work. Check the latest admission requirements and tuition with each school.

Is there a website to find and compare Japanese language schools by area, such as Tokyo or Osaka?
In "Search Japanese language schools" you can search by school name, prefecture, category (notified institution / certified Japanese language institution) and course field. The page for each prefecture ("Search by area") lists the schools in that area, and you can compare review ratings on each school's page. Check the latest admission requirements and tuition with each school.

Where can I find information on tuition and dormitories (housing) at Japanese language schools?
On JWC school pages, you can see the tuition (admission fee, tuition and so on) and whether there is a dormitory and its fees, as published on each school's official website, with the course, a link to the source and the retrieval date. This is shown only for some schools whose official websites we could read, not for every school. On each school's page, the "Tuition & cost" tab also shows reviews from students who attended the school. Fees and conditions can change, so please check the latest details with each school.

What is the difference between a notified institution (kokuji school) and a certified Japanese language institution?
A notified institution is a Japanese language institution listed in the Ministry of Justice notice (the so-called Student notice). The Immigration Services Agency of Japan publishes the list as schools that can accept international students with the Student status of residence. A certified Japanese language institution is one certified by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology under the Japanese Language Educational Institutions Certification Act. Its courses are divided into study, work and daily life, and MEXT publishes the list. Some schools are on both lists.

How can I check whether a Japanese language school is legitimate (designated or accredited by the government)?
Japanese language institutions that can accept students with the "Student" status of residence (notified institutions) are on the Immigration Services Agency of Japan's list of notified Japanese language institutions, and schools certified by the Minister of Education are on MEXT's guide to certified Japanese language institutions. JWC school pages show the categories found on these official lists, with the source and as-of date. A listing on JWC is not a recommendation or guarantee, and you should check the latest status on the publisher's list. For study-abroad agents in your home country, also check the information published by your home country's government.

Where does the school and organization information on JWC come from, and when is it updated?
It is imported from lists published by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan (notified institutions, registered support organizations and the list of Japanese language courses), the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (certified Japanese language institutions) and the Organization for Technical Intern Training (supervising organizations). Each page shows its source and as-of date. When a publisher updates its list, we re-import it and update the as-of date. Because the information is as of the date shown, it may differ from the latest situation.
